Additional information

Issued to commemorate the Ulma, Kowalski, and Baranek families — Polish Catholics executed by the Germans in 1944 for sheltering Jews in occupied Poland. The Ulma family of Markowa was particularly well-documented: Józef and Wiktoria Ulma, along with their six children and an unborn seventh, were shot by German gendarmerie on March 24, 1944, along with the eight Jews they were hiding. The families were beatified by the Catholic Church in 2023, though this coin predates that recognition by over a decade.
