Hall in Tirol was one of the most technically capable mints in the Habsburg territories, and the double thaler format it produced under Leopold I during the 1680s and 1690s reflects the period when Vienna was simultaneously managing the costs of the Great Turkish War — the campaign that culminated in the relief of Vienna in 1683 and the subsequent push deep into Ottoman-held Hungary. Large silver was being struck partly to fund ongoing military operations financed through Tyrolean mining revenues, which by the late seventeenth century were in structural decline but still significant.
Davenport's EC II classification places this squarely among the major German multiple thalers of the period — not an honorary or presentation piece, but a working denomination in high-value transactions.
