Christian IV died in February 1648, making this one of the final issues of his 59-year reign — the longest in Danish history. The Christiania Mint had only been established in 1628, partly to exploit Norwegian silver from the Kongsberg mines discovered two years earlier, and the 2 Speciedaler denomination was reserved for the weightiest, most formal emissions the mint produced.
The king was buried in Roskilde Cathedral in April 1648, months after these dies were in use. Whether any examples were struck posthumously, under the transitional authority preceding Frederik III's coronation, has not been definitively resolved in the literature.
