Christian VII was nominally king throughout this issue's production, but Denmark was in practice governed by Crown Prince Frederik, who had assumed regency in 1784 after his father's mental incapacitation — likely porphyria or schizophrenia, neither diagnosable with certainty at the time. The coins bear a king who had not exercised real power in nearly two decades.
The billon alloy reflects chronic Danish fiscal strain following the disruptions of the Napoleonic period, which would culminate in state bankruptcy in 1813.
