Additional information

Ivan Bunin occupies an uncomfortable place in Soviet memory — the first Russian writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, he accepted it in 1933 as an émigré in Paris, having fled the Bolsheviks in 1920 and never returned. The Bank of Russia's decision to commemorate him is part of a long-running "Outstanding Personalities of Russia" series, a quiet rehabilitation that the Soviet state itself never managed to complete.

Bunin died in Paris in 1953, and his works were not officially published in the USSR until 1956.
