Obverse description Central field depicts a large pomegranate tree with spreading branches bearing fruit, rendered in a crude but expressive hammered style characteristic of early republican colonial coinage. A horse or deer is visible to the left of the tree trunk, while a small structure resembling a building or hut appears to the lower right. The composition is framed by a beaded border, and the overall design reflects the rustic engraving techniques employed at the Cartagena mint during the independence period. No legend appears on this face, the imagery alone serving as the principal device.

Additional information

Cartagena declared absolute independence from Spain on November 11, 1811 — nearly eight months before the United Provinces of New Granada did — making it one of the earliest self-governing entities in South America to issue its own coinage. These copper pieces were struck under siege conditions; by 1815, Spanish General Pablo Morillo's blockade had starved the city into surrender after 106 days, and the republican monetary experiment was finished.
