Egypt's small-denomination coinage of this period was produced in substantial quantities to serve a rapidly urbanizing population, but the aluminium bronze composition chosen in the late 1970s proved problematic — the alloy discolored quickly in circulation, and many pieces were pulled from use within a few years of issue. The 1980 date places this coin squarely within the early Sadat economic liberalization period, when Egypt was reorienting its economy westward following the Camp David Accords of 1978.
