West Germany introduced the copper-clad iron version alongside the original bronze type in 1967, driven by rising copper prices that made the older alloy increasingly expensive to produce. The magnetic composition was struck in parallel with the bronze KM#106 for several years before fully replacing it — meaning both types circulated simultaneously, largely unnoticed by the public. The iron core makes attribution straightforward with any magnet.
