Hanomag's Linden works issued zinc notgeld tokens during the early 1920s when the collapse of the Reichsmark made small-denomination coinage effectively worthless and employers found themselves responsible for providing workers with functional pocket change. These pieces circulated exclusively within the factory's wage and canteen economy — redeemable at company facilities rather than in general commerce.
Zinc was the default material precisely because copper and brass had been stripped from civilian use during the war years and had not returned to free availability by the time these tokens were struck.
