Costa Rica's gold coinage of the 1860s was struck under contract at the Philadelphia Mint, a practical arrangement for a young republic without domestic minting infrastructure capable of handling gold. The 2 Pesos falls within the short series produced during this window, after which Costa Rica would eventually shift to a decimal monetary system and retire the Peso denominations entirely by the 1890s.
KM#113 is a notably low-mintage type across all three years of issue combined. Philadelphia production records from this period are incomplete for foreign contract work, which complicates census analysis.
