Pinell de Brai is a small municipality in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Valencian towns, it issued its own emergency paper currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's 1936 decree authorizing local councils to print small-denomination notes to address the chronic coin shortage. These municipal emissions — collectively called "moneda de paper" or "guerra civil locals" — were produced under wildly varying conditions, and output from villages of this size was often measured in hundreds rather than thousands of sheets.
Turró catalogued over 1,800 distinct local issuers; Pinell de Brai at #1837 sits near the tail end of that sequence, reflecting how deeply the shortage penetrated even the smallest settlements in Republican-held territory.
