Gustav Vasa established the Svartsjö mint in the early 1540s as part of his broader effort to assert royal control over Swedish coin production, pulling it away from ecclesiastical and municipal mints that had operated with considerable independence. The mint at Svartsjö palace was short-lived, functioning for only a few years before production consolidated elsewhere.
Bust type I distinguishes the earliest dies from this facility — a distinction that matters because Svartsjö output is relatively limited compared to Stockholm production of the same period.
