Obverse description Central field bears four large Chinese characters arranged in a cruciform pattern, reading top to bottom and right to left, conveying the denomination and metal. The characters are enclosed within a beaded inner circle, outside of which four six-pointed rosette or star ornaments are positioned at the cardinal points. The flat, unadorned field between the beaded circle and the milled border gives the design a stark, utilitarian character typical of late Qing provincial coinage.
