John the Fearless became Count of Flanders in 1405 following the death of his father Philip the Bold, and these small copper issues were among the first struck under his Flemish authority. The "FL" privy mark ties this piece to a specific mint arrangement rather than a simple geographic identifier — Flemish copper coinage of this period was subject to overlapping jurisdictional claims between ducal and municipal minting rights, making attribution of individual issues a persistent problem for specialists.
