German prisoner-of-war camp scrip is among the most document-historically specific paper money ever produced — each piece ties directly to a named facility, a fixed population, and a defined legal boundary beyond which it was worthless by design. Münster i. W. (Westphalia) held Allied prisoners from early in the First World War, and the camp administration issued its own denominated scrip to control internal purchasing power and prevent the accumulation of Reichsmark currency by prisoners, which German authorities considered a security risk.
The 2 Mark denomination sits at the upper end of typical camp scrip face values, suggesting it was intended for canteen purchases of some significance rather than petty transactions. Printing was handled locally — not unusual for camp issues, which were generally produced by regional commercial printers on short notice with minimal security features.
