| Beschrijving voorzijde | Printed entirely in green, the note is dominated by an elaborate central guilloche rosette enclosing the denomination numeral '2' and the text 'GUT FÜR ZWEI MARK'. Four smaller guilloche roundels, each bearing the Imperial German eagle, occupy the corners, with the denomination 'MARK' repeated at left and right. The camp name 'GEFANGENEN-LAGER' arches across the top in large bold letters, 'CASSEL' appears at the bottom, and a series number and serial number in black are printed at the upper left and upper right respectively; a handstamp is applied to the face. |

German prisoner of war camp scrip occupies one of the stranger corners of notaphily. Kassel held Allied prisoners during the First World War, and these internal camp currencies were issued to prevent detainees from accumulating Reichsmark — legal tender that could theoretically fund an escape. The scrip was worthless beyond the wire.
Most camp issues from this period were printed on whatever materials were available locally, and condition suffers accordingly — thin, cheap paper, often found with heavy fold wear from daily canteen use. The 1914–18 German camp series as a whole was never systematically catalogued until decades after the armistice.
