The left field displays the Ukrainian national trident (tryzub) at the top, beneath which appears the issuer legend НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ in two lines, flanked on the lower left by a decorative olive branch. Below the branch, two military order ribbons and a star-shaped Hero of the Soviet Union gold star medal are depicted in relief, alluding to Kovpak's decorations. Additional information

Kovpak led one of the most operationally ambitious partisan campaigns of the Second World War, commanding the Sumy partisan formation on raids that covered thousands of kilometres through German-occupied Ukraine and into the Carpathians by 1943. The Ukrainian Soviet government decorated him twice as Hero of the Soviet Union, and he later served decades in the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR. This coin was issued as part of Ukraine's long-running "Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine" bimetallic circulating commemorative programme, which the National Bank began in 1995 and has used consistently to rehabilitate figures whose significance was either suppressed or reframed under Soviet historiography.
