Olha Kobylianska was a Ukrainian modernist writer whose work circulated in Austro-Hungarian Bukovyna — present-day western Ukraine — at the turn of the twentieth century. She wrote primarily in German before switching to Ukrainian, a deliberate political and cultural act in a region where Romanian, German, and Ukrainian identities competed sharply. This coin was issued on the 150th anniversary of her birth.
