Murashko was shot dead in Kyiv in June 1919 — almost certainly by Cheka operatives, though no conviction was ever secured. One of Ukraine's most significant post-Impressionist painters, he had studied under Mykola Ge in Kyiv and later under Ilya Repin in St. Petersburg, exhibiting across Europe before returning home. The timing of this commemorative, issued during the first year of active fighting in the Donbas, carries a certain weight: a state asserting cultural identity through a figure the Soviet security apparatus likely killed.
