At upper right, a modern multi-storey university building is shown, contrasting the historic and contemporary campus. Superimposed at upper centre is a circular medallion bearing the facing bust of V.L. Kirpichov, the institute's founder, with his name inscribed below in Cyrillic. The curved Cyrillic legend НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ ТЕХНІЧНИЙ УНІВЕРСИТЕТ arcs along the upper rim, while ХАРКІВСЬКИЙ ПОЛІТЕХНІЧНИЙ ІНСТИТУТ curves along the lower rim.
