Issued as part of Ukraine's long-running flora series, this coin appeared in 2014 — the same year Russia annexed Crimea and armed conflict began in the Donbas. The National Bank of Ukraine continued releasing commemorative bimetallic and cupronickel issues throughout the crisis, an act of institutional normalcy under anything but normal conditions. Cyclamen coum, native to the Crimean peninsula among other regions, carries an unintended political weight in this particular year of issue.
