Obverse description The field is entirely occupied by the composite Burgundian coat of arms, rendered as a quartered shield supported by a decorative cartouche. The quarters display the arms of Burgundy ancient (semé of France with a bordure), Burgundy modern (per bend), Brabant (a lion), and Flanders (a lion), with a central escutcheon. The heraldic shield is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, beyond which runs the peripheral legend in uncial Gothic lettering. The overall composition is characteristic of late-medieval Flemish hammered billon coinage.
