French prisoner-of-war camps issued their own internal scrip during the First World War as a matter of administrative control — preventing detainees from accumulating French currency that could fund escape attempts or black-market dealings with guards. The Dépôt des Prisonniers de Guerre at Nevers was one of dozens of such facilities that produced canteen tokens in paper form, denominated in francs but redeemable only within the camp's own canteen.
The "bon de cantine" designation is specific: these were not general-purpose camp currency but strictly canteen vouchers, limiting their use to food and basic goods purchases. That narrow function is why surviving examples are relatively uncommon — they had no reason to leave the facility.
