Hungary's 2 Forint coin was removed from circulation in 2008 when the National Bank of Hungary withdrew all 1 and 2 Forint pieces, deeming the cost of production greater than their face value. The silver collector restrike series — of which this is a part — was issued specifically because the circulating coin had ceased to exist, preserving denominations that Hungarians had used daily since 1946.
The .999 fine silver format was chosen to distinguish these unambiguously from base-metal circulation strikes.
