Julius II used his pontificate's finances aggressively — commissioning the rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica, funding Michelangelo, and bankrolling near-constant military campaigns to recover Papal territories lost under Alexander VI. The Fiorino di Camera was the papacy's prestige gold denomination, struck to a standard deliberately close to the Florentine florin to facilitate trade and diplomatic payments across Italy.
Berman 557 is among the scarcer Julius II gold types, with surviving examples concentrated in institutional collections rather than the open market.
