Sidi Mohammed IV came to the Moroccan throne in 1859 inheriting a treasury hollowed out by the indemnity payments forced on Morocco after the Tetouan War with Spain — a conflict that lasted barely four months but cost the sultanate 100 million pesetas it did not have. Bronze fractional coinage of this period was struck under considerable fiscal pressure, with minting operations distributed and inconsistent enough that pieces without an identifiable mint attribution were simply the norm rather than the exception.
