| Obverse description | The inner disc features a bold portrait bust of William Shakespeare facing slightly left, rendered in high relief after the style of the celebrated Chandos portrait, with flowing shoulder-length hair and a small pointed beard, wearing an Elizabethan doublet with an elaborate lace collar. The legend 'WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE' arcs along the left field, while the commemorative dates '1616-2016' appear to the upper right. The issuer inscription 'SAN MARINO' is inscribed along the lower right, and the engraver's initials 'MB' appear in the mid-right field.
