Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Italian unification, this coin appeared at a politically awkward moment — the Lega Nord was actively campaigning against the celebrations, with then-party leader Umberto Bossi boycotting official events and dismissing the Risorgimento as a northern conquest dressed up as national liberation. The commemorative coin went ahead regardless, struck by the same state institute that has handled Italian currency production since 1928.
