San Marino's 2010 commemorative honors the 500th anniversary of Botticelli's death — he died in Florence in 1510, largely forgotten after Savonarola's puritanical campaigns had turned public taste sharply against his sensual mythological work. He spent his final years in poverty, his earlier Medici-era commissions by then deeply unfashionable. San Marino's annual commemorative program allows the microstate to issue collector euros without the circulation obligations binding larger eurozone members, which is precisely why these pieces almost never see a cash register.
