San Marino issues commemorative 2-euro coins under a special agreement with the European Union, permitted despite not being an EU member state — one of a handful of microstates granted this dispensation. The 2020 Raffaello issue marks the 500th anniversary of the painter's death in Rome on April 6, 1520, aged 37. He died of uncertain causes, possibly exhaustion or a fever following a particularly demanding period completing Vatican commissions.
San Marino's annual commemorative allocations are strictly capped, keeping mintages low relative to eurozone member issues.
