Obverse description The central disk features two theatrical masks derived from a second-century AD Roman mosaic housed in the Capitoline Museums, Rome, depicting characters of New Comedy: a young woman and a slave. Surrounding the masks is the architectural plan of a Roman theatre, along with the monogram 'RI' (Repubblica Italiana). The mint mark 'R' appears at the left of the field, and the engraver's initials 'LDS' (Luciana De Simoni) at the right. In the lower portion of the field, the legend reads '184 A.C.' (the birth year of Plautus), '2016', and 'PLAUTO'. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union.
