Issued to mark the seventieth anniversary of the Italian Constitution, which came into force on 1 January 1948 after being drafted in the immediate aftermath of Fascist rule and the Second World War. The Constituent Assembly that produced it included women serving as elected representatives for the first time in Italian history — 21 of the 556 members. The document took effect just three years after Mussolini's execution and the referendum that abolished the monarchy.
