| Obverse description | The inner disc features a facing bust of Galileo Galilei, rendered in high relief after a celebrated portrait, with a full beard and period costume with an open collar. To the left of the portrait appears the monogram of the Italian Republic (RI), while to the right is the mint mark R (Rome) and a depiction of a telescope, one of the instruments associated with Galileo's astronomical observations. The engraver's initials C.M. (Claudia Momoni) appear in the lower right field. The legend GALILEO GALILEI arcs across the upper portion of the inner disc, and the commemorative dates 1564·2014 are inscribed in the lower field, marking the 450th anniversary of Galileo's birth. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union. |
