| Obverse description | The obverse features a facing portrait of Christopher Columbus in the centre field, accompanied by three caravels rendered in relief below and to the sides of his effigy. The legend 'SAN MARINO' arcs along the upper periphery of the inner disc, while a wind rose motif appears to the right of the portrait alongside the Rome Mint mark 'R' and the engraver's initials 'LDS'. A scroll beneath the portrait bears the commemorative dates '1506 — 2006', marking the 500th anniversary of Columbus's death. The outer ring displays the twelve stars of the European Union in the customary arrangement common to all eurozone coinage. |
