Barbara of Celje — Holy Roman Empress and Queen of Hungary, Bohemia, and Germany — was one of the most politically formidable women of the fifteenth century, widely feared by contemporaries and later romanticized in Central European folklore as the "Black Queen." Slovenia's decision to issue this coin in 2014 marked the 600th anniversary of her coronation as Queen of Hungary alongside Sigismund of Luxembourg. She is one of very few medieval women to appear on a Eurozone circulation coin.
