San Marino's euro coinage is produced under a series of monetary agreements with the European Union — not as an EU member, but as a microstate with historic ties to Italy. Each year's design is contracted to the Italian State Mint, and annual mintages are tightly capped, making circulation finds outside San Marino's borders genuinely uncommon. Collectors frequently acquire these directly from the San Marino philatelic and numismatic office at face value, meaning worn examples are almost nonexistent.
The 2017 changeover to a new reverse type was mandated EU-wide, requiring all member and associated states to update the national side to include the issuing country's name in full.
