San Marino's euro coinage is produced under a formal monetary agreement with the EU — the republic has no central bank and mints its coins at the Italian Zecca in Rome under an annual quota. That quota, set at roughly 2.4 million coins per year across all denominations, is so small relative to eurozone circulation that San Marino issues consistently disappear into collector hands before reaching any meaningful circulaton. The 2nd map reverse, introduced across all eurozone countries in 2007, updated the geographic depiction to include Cyprus and Malta following their EU accession.
