Additional information

The golden toad (Incilius periglenes) was declared extinct in 1989, making it one of the first species formally linked to climate change-driven disappearance. Endemic to a single high-altitude cloud forest near Monteverde, Costa Rica, it vanished after a series of unusually dry breeding seasons. Palau has no geographical or political connection to the species whatsoever — this is a purely commercial wildlife issue targeting the bullion and collector market, a common practice among Pacific microstates with minimal domestic coin demand.
