The Memphis Belle was the first USAAF B-17 to complete 25 combat missions over Europe with its crew intact, finishing that threshold run in May 1943. The aircraft and its crew were immediately pulled from combat and sent on a war bonds tour across the United States — the mission was propaganda as much as reward.
