Obverse description Right-facing diademed and draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing a pearl drop earring and pearl necklace, her hair styled in loose curls beneath a crowned tiara. The effigy, executed in high relief against a mirror-polished field, is attributed to the Maklouf portrait. The peripheral legend reads 'ELIZABETH II · TWO DOLLARS · COOK ISLANDS' arranged around the circumference, with the date '2001' at the base, all enclosed within a beaded border.

Additional information

Part of Cook Islands' long-running wildlife series issued through the early 2000s, this piece was produced under the monetary arrangement that allows Cook Islands to issue its own coinage while remaining in free association with New Zealand. The Indian Pitta — a migratory passerine ranging from the Indian subcontinent into Southeast Asia — has no particular connection to the Cook Islands themselves, a geographic liberty the issuer took routinely across this series.
