Part of Niue's "Twelve Days of Christmas" series issued across multiple years, this coin's legal tender status derives from Niue's monetary arrangement with New Zealand, which has underwritten the island's coinage rights since 1974 despite a population that has never exceeded a few thousand. The series was produced for the collector market from the outset — no one was spending these in Alofi.
"Colly birds" is the original fourth-century English lyric wording, referring to blackbirds rather than the "calling birds" of modern misreadings.
