This issue entered circulation under British colonial administration and continued uninterrupted through the 1997 handover, making it one of the few physical artifacts of daily Hong Kong life that passed from Crown colony to Special Administrative Region without redesign or redenomination. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority, established in 1993 — the same year this type begins — took over currency oversight from the Exchange Fund, a transition that had more bureaucratic than numismatic consequence.
The long production run through 2019 means late-date pieces were in active circulation during the protests that year.
