Strauß served as Federal Minister of Defence from 1956, overseeing the reconstitution of the Bundeswehr, as Chairman of the CSU from 1961, and as Minister-President of Bavaria from 1978 until his death in 1988. His name F.J. STRAUSS appears as an inscription associated with the portrait. The coin honours his central role as a statesman throughout the formative decades of the Federal Republic. |
