| Obverse description | Left-facing portrait bust of Franz Josef Strauß (1915–1988), rendered in high relief in a realist style. The legend arching around the upper periphery reads BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, with the dates 1949 and 1989 flanking the portrait in the field, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Federal Republic of Germany.
