| Obverse description | Left-facing portrait bust of Franz Josef Strauß (1915–1988), rendered in high relief in a realist style. The legend arching around the upper periphery reads BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, with the dates 1949 and 1989 flanking the portrait in the field, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Federal Republic of Germany. Strauß served as Federal Minister of Defence from 1956, overseeing the reconstitution of the Bundeswehr, as Chairman of the CSU from 1961, and as Minister-President of Bavaria from 1978 until his death in 1988. His name F.J. STRAUSS appears as an inscription associated with the portrait. The coin honours his central role as a statesman throughout the formative decades of the Federal Republic. |

| Reverse description | The German Federal Eagle (Bundesadler) is depicted centrally, with wings spread and head turned to the right, rendered in the heraldic style standardised for Federal Republic coinage. The legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND arches around the upper periphery, with the date and mint mark letter appearing above the eagle. The denomination 2 and the inscription DEUTSCHE MARK are arranged around the lower portion of the field. The overall design follows the standard reverse type used for the 2 Deutsche Mark series. |
