Additional information

Costa Rica's postwar monetary reorganization brought the Banco Central into existence only in 1950, replacing the older Banco Nacional system. This 1954 issue is among the earliest circulating coinage struck under the new central bank's authority. The stainless steel composition reflects a broader Latin American trend of the period, as rising silver prices made traditional alloys economically untenable for high-denomination circulation pieces.
