| Obverse description | The central device depicts a heraldic Union shield with horizontal lines in the chief and vertical stripes in the body, flanked on either side by crossed arrows and laurel branches forming a decorative wreath. Above the shield, a curved scroll banner bears the national motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' in raised Latin lettering, with 'WE' appearing on a smaller central scroll. The date is inscribed in the lower field beneath the shield. The design, engraved by James B. Longacre, reflects the patriotic symbolism of the Civil War era, notably marking the first appearance of the motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' on a United States coin. |
