2 Baht - Rama IX Thammasat University

Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of Thammasat University, founded in 1934 by Pridi Phanomyong — a jurist and statesman who would later be implicated in the 1946 death of Rama VIII and spend the rest of his life in exile. The university he built was the site of the October 1976 massacre, when students were killed on its grounds by paramilitary and police forces in one of Thailand's most violent political episodes. Commemorating this institution required navigating considerable official sensitivity around that history.
