Bukhara's 1918 emergency issues are among the most unusual fabric-based notes produced anywhere during the revolutionary period. The emirate, then nominally independent under Emir Alim Khan but increasingly hemmed in by Bolshevik pressure from Tashkent, resorted to silk as a substrate precisely because paper was unavailable in sufficient quantity — not as an aesthetic choice but as a logistical one. The denomination pairing reflects the collision of two monetary systems: local tengas alongside the ruble equivalency imposed by the reality of regional trade.
Silk notes from this series survive in surprisingly variable condition; the weave holds ink differently than paper, making clean impressions rare.
