Luxembourg introduced the 2.50 euro denomination specifically for commemorative circulation pieces, a face value with no equivalent elsewhere in the eurozone. The Stade de Luxembourg, opened in 2021, replaced the old Josy Barthel Municipal Stadium and was built to meet UEFA Category 4 requirements — a prerequisite for Luxembourg's national team to host competitive European fixtures at home rather than abroad.
The bimetallic format, pairing a .925 silver centre with a nordic gold ring, places this firmly outside normal eurozone production agreements, which is why Luxembourg can issue non-standard denominations at all.
