The 17-kreuzer denomination was a peculiarity of the Holy Roman Empire's fragmented monetary system — an odd value that existed primarily to facilitate exchange at the ratio of currency in circulation rather than from any tidy arithmetic. Salzburg's ecclesiastical mint was among the more prolific producers of such regional silver, operating with considerable autonomy under prince-archbishops who held both secular and spiritual authority over the territory.
Schrattenbach ruled Salzburg from 1753 until his death in 1771, and his early issues like this 1754 piece were struck while Leopold Mozart was employed at the archiepiscopal court — a minor historical footnote, but one that grounds the coin in a recognizable milieu.
